The catalytic converter - the general information, check of a state and replacement

In order to avoid violation of the guarantee certificates extending to components of systems of decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases you make check and service of the catalytic converter in the conditions of a workshop of car service.


General information

The catalytic converter is a component of systems of decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases, is switched on in structure of system of release and serves for decrease in issue in the atmosphere of toxic components. There are two types of catalytic converters. The ordinary oxidizing converter allows to reduce the content in the fulfilled gases of hydrocarbons and monoxide of carbon. The three-functional catalytic converter (TWC) in addition allows to reduce emission of nitrogen oxides (NOH). On all models considered in the present manual three-functional catalytic converters are used.

On the considered models two TWC which are externally looking as the additional muffler are a part of system of production of the fulfilled gases.

Basic components of the catalyst are platinum (Pt) and rhodium (Rh) which mix is applied with a thin layer on the cellular design having the oval form, or a porous ceramic basis.

Check

The diagnostic equipment for check of serviceability of a condition of the catalytic converter is expensive and extremely difficult in operation. At emergence of suspicions on failure of the converter, drive away the car for check on car repair shop.

Every time when the car climbs any reason above the ground, examine the converter on existence of signs of mechanical damages, traces of leaks and development of corrosion. Check a condition of welded seams and reliability of tightening of flange bolts of fastening of the device to sections of system of production of the fulfilled gases. The defective catalytic converter is subject to replacement.

You watch reliability of fastening of the thermofilter and that between the converter and elements of a chassis/body the gap of sufficient size constantly remained (see the Head Routine maintenance).

Removal

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped with a security code before disconnecting the battery make sure that you have the correct combination for input of the audio system in action!


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.
2. Disconnect an electrical wiring from the forward oxygen sensor (see the Section Information sensors, the relay and actuation mechanisms - the general information).
3. On the Californian models at this stage disconnect also an electrical wiring from the back oxygen sensor (see the Section Information sensors, the relay and actuation mechanisms - the general information).
4. The car also establish to Poddomkratta it on props.
5. Disconnect an electrical wiring from the back oxygen sensor (except the Californian models).
6. Separate the central section of system of release from the forward catalytic converter.
7. Turn out bolts of fastening of a reception pipe to heads of cylinders.
8. Separate the catalytic converter from a reception pipe.

Do not delay a reception pipe and the central section of system of release down!


Installation

All sealing laying of system of production of the fulfilled gases are subject to replacement without fail!

Installation is made upside-down. All fixture drags on with the required effort (30 ± 5 Nanometers: the catalytic converter to a reception pipe and a reception pipe to heads; 35 ± 5 Nanometers: the catalytic converter to the central section).

Removal

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped with a security code before disconnecting the battery make sure that you have the correct combination for input of the audio system in action!


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.
2. The car also establish to Poddomkratta it on props.
3. Disconnect an electrical wiring from the back oxygen sensor (except the Californian models).
4. Disconnect assembly of the central section of system of release with the back catalytic converter from back section.
5. Disconnect the central section from the forward catalytic converter.
6. Remove the disconnected assembly from suspensions of support.

Try not to delay the remained sections of system of production of the fulfilled gases down!


Installation

Installation is made upside-down. Track that all fixture was tightened with the required effort (35 ± 5 Nanometers: the central section to the forward catalytic converter; 18 ± 5 Nanometers: assembly of the central section with the catalytic converter to back section; 35 ± 5 Nanometers: the central section to arms of support).
